Financial Literacy Education Program and Awareness Program (15th – 24th March, 2010)

Financial Literacy Education & Awareness Program is a mass awareness campaign spearheaded by the RMA in collaboration with the Financial Institutions (FIs) in Bhutan mainly with an objective to educate the public at large on the services provided by different FIs, their roles and responsibilities, the rights of the clients of the FIs while doing business with the them and also to improve the public’s understanding of the financial sector.

The program will be conducted by the RMA in different phases with the western Dzongkhags (Thimphu, Paro, Wangdue Phodrang, Punakha, Haa and Chukha) targeted in the first phase. The campaign started off from the capital on March 15, 2010 and ended by March 24, 2010 in Chukha. The program was extended by one more day following a request by the Gedu College of Business Studies to conduct the program at their campus. The campaign was supplemented by a BBS live TV program on 16th and 17th March, 2010.

The program comprised of two parts starting with short presentations by the representatives of the financial institutions followed by a Q&A session. During the Q&A session, the public clarified their doubts as well as put forward queries pertaining to the services provided by the FIs in Bhutan.

The program helped the people to better understand the role of the financial institutions, their functions, products and services. This program also enabled the RMA to meet its objective of improving financial inclusion in Bhutan as well as enabled the public to develop their skill in making sound financial decisions, recognize and address credit issues, avoid predatory lenders and credit scams.
